Sometimes It Pays to Eat at Home

Posted on November 11, 2011

While this blog may be centered around eating fast food, I have to point out some of the benefits of eating at home. No matter how much you may love to eat Burger King and Taco Bell every day, sometimes it’s nice to take a break from the grease and enjoy a home cooked meal. I have a diet that primarily consists of eating out, but even I like to eat every once and awhile. Here are a few reasons why you may want to cook your next meal at home, rather than eating out.

Home Cooking Saves Money

In most cases, you can save money by cooking at home. A can of soup is a lot cheaper than a bowl of soup from Subway, and it tastes about the same. You may not save money making a rib sandwich at home if you’re comparing the costs to that of a McRib, but in general, home cooking saves you money. When you’re living on a college budget, every extra cent that you can save matters. Do this every once and awhile, and you should see a noticeable difference in the amount of money you have left over each month.

Home Cooking Is Healthier

If you’re worried about eating well, you need to try cutting back on fast food every now and then. It is hard to escape the grease when you eat out, even if you get a salad or oatmeal. The ingredients used in fast food items are simply not as healthy as the ones you may use at home, with the exception of restaurants like Subway and Panera. You may find healthy fast food somewhere in your area, but for the most part, you will get healthier food from your own kitchen.

Home Cooking Tastes Better

As much as I love a good fast food burger, I can’t deny the utter brilliance of barbecue burgers from home. Perhaps I have a father with a special way of making burgers on the grill, but last I checked, burgers taste better at cookouts than at eat-outs. There are cases when fast food tastes better, but that is usually because it is more fattening. Your taste buds may appreciate a nice, home cooked meal every once and awhile.

Home Cooking Is Romantic

You can’t rely on your executive administrative assistant title to get you in with the ladies every time. If you want to truly impress a girl you’re going out with, a round of $1 burgers at McDonald’s isn’t going to cut it. Making a meal at home is going to go a long way to impress someone in comparison to fast food. I actually remember the first meal that my husband made for me, which was roughly a week or two into our relationship. He went the extra mile and sprinkled rose petals on the dining room table, just for me. Sigh, those were the days. See boys – it works.

Home Cooking Helps You Appreciate Fast Food

If you eat fast food every single day, your taste buds will eventually become numb to the awesomeness. Rather than burning your mouth out on fast food, you should work in some home cooking so you appreciate eating out more. They say that distance makes the heart grow fonder, and that could be the case with you and fast food. Take a break and see what happens.

I’m not saying you have to give up fast food altogether, but at least try skipping a meal every now and then. You might be surprised by how much of a difference that could make in your diet. Go ahead and finish the Whopper you’re eating, but try to make tomorrow’s breakfast out of something you have in the fridge. Unless of course, what’s in your fridge is today’s leftover fast food. Ugh, it never ends…
